West of the UK - July 2002
I decided to rent a car and go visiting the west of the United Kingdom with my parents who were visiting me. Below is a quick summary of this four-day trip...
1st day: Oxford - The Cotswolds PHOTOS
- Since I live in Cambridge, it was an obligation to see which city (Cambridge or Oxford) is the prettiest... The winner is... Cambridge (OK it may be biased!). [University of Oxford: Visitors ]
- We then stopped in Broadway and Chipping Campden afterwards.
- We stopped for the night in Eastcomb (near Stroud) in a very good B&B but lost in the middle of nowhere.
2nd day: East of Wales PHOTOS
- The first stop was "Cambridge" (no kidding!); there is a small village with this name in the Gloucestershire. Certainly not as famous as the one in Cambridgeshire...
- We crossed the Severn using the old bridge (M48) to reach Wales and made our first stop to visit Tintern Abbey .
- Then Caerleon where due to an event ("Roman Military Spectacular") we couldn't go into the amphitheatre but we did get a series of nice shots ;-).
- Later in the day, we went south to Cardiff and visited the castle (actually the grounds and keep not the delirious modern castle).
- We finished wandering in the city and on the bay where the temperature was very nice.
3rd day: East of Wales - Bath - Salisbury PHOTOS
- Due to the insistence of our landlord for the night, we made our first visit around the Caerphilly Castle with its broken towers.
- After that, we crossed the Severn back to England via the new bridge (M4), to reach Bath.
- There, we visited the roman baths and the city.
- Finally, we stopped in Salisbury to walk in the city and visit the cathedral .
4th and last day: Stonehenge - Uffington White Horse PHOTOS
- When I booked the accomodation, I tried to find a B&B near Stonehenge to avoid the crowd. Actually if you are before 10am, that's fine... so we were to see the famous and mysterious Stonehenge .
- And to finish the trip, on the way back home, we climbed the hills around the Uffington White Horse .
